Cancer Corner

We all know someone affected by cancer.  There are some very simplistic but necessary tips for navigating the journey of fighting cancer. Below listed are starting points that you may want to consider for you and your loved ones.

  • BALANCE- It is very important to maintain balance while juggling life's essentials: Self Care; Spirituality: Education; Work; Family; Finances; Health; Community; Hobbies and Interests.

  • Time Management- How you manage your time will be critical when going through cancer treatment or caring for loved ones.  There may be a need to give some consideration to utilizing features on your electronic devices, i.e. "Focus" on iPhones to schedule when you will allow texts, calls, notifications etcetera to be allowed only during certain time periods.  This is a way to protect your peace and not get overwhelmed with the demands of allowing others to have complete access to you 24 hours a day.

Scheduling a bedtime schedule and strictly adhering to it will promote balance in your sleep rhythm,  energy, focus, and healing. Shutting down electronics 1-2 hours before bedtime will allow your body to decompress and fall asleep faster.

Stress Management- Avoiding stress and focusing on positive thoughts and vibes are essential to navigating the cancer journey.  Life is filled with stress, but how you choose to manage it will determine the effect on your body. Avoid going to bed upset or angry.  Always try to make amends. That may look like you "Agreeing to Disagree" for the sake of peace and healing.  Trying to make better health choices and adding more movement is not only a way to relieve stress, but you will encourage healthy habits and healing. This may be as simple as adding more uncooked vegetables to your diet; exploring new fruits and vegetables; decreasing meat and dairy intake; adding more steps to your day; increasing movement.  Movement can be a gradual addition to your days. For example, while standing at the sink brushing your teeth or waiting on your coffee pot to finish brewing, you may want to do a few squats or walking in place.  No matter how little you do more, it helps. Laughter is a great healing mechanism and reduces stress. Be sure to indulge in more activities that bring you joy and laughter.

Healthy Choices- Considering most Americans eat diets with too much sugar and salt, increased water intake can only help flush more toxins through your kidneys to naturally cleanse.  You will start to feel an increased amount of energy,  better looking and feeling skin. Putting quality foods in your body is very important.  Sometimes you may not always have access to highly nutritious foods as America is plagued with many food deserts.  Considering starting a garden or joining a community garden network may be the answer to having access to high quality foods and an organic hobby/therapy. A garden can increase the possibilities of trying and liking new foods. It is great to encourage healing, education, and help the planet.  There are various ways to garden.  Please feel free to reach out and receive some resourceful information on #StartingAGarden.

Caregivers, family , and friends of cancer patients are a necessary component of healing.  It is important that they encourage peace, healing, respect boundaries, avoid unnecessary stress, and maintain their self care practices daily also. It does take a village to manifest positive outcomes.  Please put the energy out into the universe that you want to receive .  It is powerful to exert positive energy, and the return is ten fold.

Finances- There may be a need for financial assistance for transportation; medicine; treatment; and special diets.  Be sure to explore resources at your cancer resource center; oncologists, radiation oncologists; and hospital financial assistance offices.  Reduce unnecessary spending by recreating a budget. Work on revising your advance directives including wills, trusts, and life insurance. This can reduce stress on yourself and caregivers even if you are not encountering cancer. Many are not aware that if you have life insurance, many funeral homes want you to put a deposit down or pay for the entire service upfront and are not willing to wait for insurance funds to be paid out.  Financial planning and revising are very important to reduce compounding stress while trying to get through a traumatic life occurrence such as cancer.
