Quality sleep and how to obtain it as a regular lifestyle.

Reflections on the things my body taught me on my Breast Cancer Journey

The Most important thing I learned was to listen to my body, soul, and spiritual instincts before, during, and after my breast cancer surgeries.  It became so important to put me first and not compromise my fundamental needs.  This was a practice I had begun over the last 10 years.  I took that "People Pleasing " to a new height.  I had no boundaries as it related to going all in to help others succeed at the cost of my own balanced well being. Through it all, the fundamental thing I will not sacrifice is my quality rest ever again.

Ten ways I foster good quality rest as a fundamental component of my balanced living

  1. I established a bedtime!  For me, 930 p.m. works great to allow me 8 hours or more of rest.  Of course, I adjust the time as necessary if I need to rise earlier, but I make sure I allow a minimum of eight hours of quality rest time.  There are times where I may not sleep the full eight hours, but I still have my mindset focused on quality rest,
  2. Preparation is a key element to achieving quality rest on a nightly bases.  That includes setting boundaries for #calls, #visitors, and #electronics.
  3. I have my phone set to #DoNotDisturb one half hour before bed time as I don't usually receive many evening calls.  It may work best for others to consider setting their phones one hour before bed time to #DoNotDisturb if they tend to receive more phone calls in the evening.  I do alter this schedule with settings for immediate family members to be able to contact me in the event of an emergency without having to make multiple attempts to contact me.
  4. During the week I do not like to have visitors past 5 p.m.  This allows for me to participate in a normal dinner time, evening chores, preparation for the next day and wind down time.
  5. Electronics have often caused interruption in my sleep patterns especially when I would sleep with with the television or radio on.  Not only was my subconscious recording all of this material, but many times it would affect my dreams and thoughts.  However,  I do fall asleep now to spiritually enriching materials (#Sermons) or  #SleepMeditations.  It has a positive impact on me the following day.
  6. Decluttering my bedroom before bed time and in the morning has a positive impact on my demeanor by making my space more inviting and relaxing.
  7. Avoiding caffeine in the afternoon does help me to avoid feeling tired but unable to fall asleep at night. This is a very frustrating feeling, and it sets the stage for having a challenged day of staying alert and focused. Instead of increasing the caffeine intake, I tend to increase my water intake which brings balance for me.
  8. There are some times where I have had a tough time falling asleep.  I usually will opt for a dose of  #CBD oil or a small bowl of low sugar cereal.  That usually will help me to fall asleep soon.
  9. I am mindful of what I watch, listen or read before bed because I want to avoid triggers of arguments, nightmares, or an unsettled spirit.
  10. I enjoy preparing for a good night's rest by putting calming #EssentialOils in my diffuser; dimming the lights; having the room at a cool temperature with good ventilation; and comfortable bedding.

Maybe some of these tips will help you to have better rest.  Keep in mind it takes time to adjust to change, but working towards a goal of quality rest will be the the best gift to self!
