When Middle-Aged Women Feel Unappreciated: Choosing a Self-Full Life

When You Are the One Who Shows Up for Everyone, But No One Shows Up for You There is a kind of heartbreak that does not always come from romance, death, or betrayal. Sometimes it comes from being overlooked by the very people you have spent years supporting. It comes from being the dependable one. The strong one. The one who helps with paperwork, family problems, emotional breakdowns, court situations, divorces, money stress, moving plans, childcare, aging parents, adult children, and everyone’s emergencies. Then one day, something beautiful happens in your life. You accomplish something hard. You survive a season that almost broke you. You graduate. You heal. You rebuild. You finally have a moment that deserves celebration. And the room gets quiet. No “Congratulations.” No “I’m proud of you.” No card. No thoughtful message. No real acknowledgment until you finally say, “Do you all even see me?” That kind of silence hurts. The Pain of Feeling Unappreciated in Mi...

Coping with being inside during self quarantine

10 Coping tools to endure self quarantine:

  1.   Maintain your "Me Time."  Although you may be stuck inside with other family members or housemates, it is an adjustment that can go smoother by taking time for yourself.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Communicate with others that you need some time alone
  • Indulge in long baths or showers
  • Set a time to meditate and pray in the morning and before bed
  • Get up and do something in between commercials
  • Develop a fun fitness routine
  2.  Take advantage of the time to connect with others via social media, texts, email, face time, and telephone.  Please keep in mind the elderly, sick and shut in.

  3.  Consider writing notes, postcards or letters to loved ones that may be incarcerated, away in the military, and treatment centers.

  4.  Start a hobby that you may have put off in the past.  Shop online and save on things you are buying.  Get Cash Back on things you are purchasing.

  5.  Think of ways you can Pay-It-Forward to humanity i.e. making masks, volunteering to assist with providing childcare for first responders, help with local food banks, and check on local neighbors that are elderly and disabled.

  6.  Create your "New Normal" daily schedule.

  7.  Think of ways to become more self sufficient.  (start an indoor garden, learn to make some household items, i.e. hand sanitizer, wipes, canned fruits and vegetables)

  8.  Indulge in healthier food and drink choices to maintain health, physical stamina, and emotional well being.  Stay hydrated.

9,  Consider supplementing your diet with vitamin-d rich foods or vitamins due to lack of sun exposure.  It also wards off depression.

10.  Anxiety and depression may tend to creep up.  This is very normal.  However, don't allow it to set in.  Consider all of the suggestions listed above.  If things are not working, please seek professional help immediately.
